Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries seeks applications for a full-time Library Assistant V at Butler Library, Access Services.

SCHEDULE:

Saturday through Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sunday: 11am to 7pm

Schedule subject to change based on library hours of operation. Schedule may change during intersession, summer session, and from semester to semester.

Responsibilities

  • Screen visitors to the libraries; communicate access and other library policies.
  • Update and maintain Libraries user databases including: entering new patron information into the Integrated Library System (ILS) database; editing data in ILS database when changes are required.
  • Analyze and resolve problems and discrepancies as reported by patrons or as detected by Libraries staff.
  • Create paper and photo ID cards using the appropriate technologies.
  • Train and supervise student employees·.
  • Charge, renew and discharge library materials using the library’s borrowing system. Manage system-wide inquiries related to library fines, fees and patron restrictions.
  • Communicate information about general library services, policies and procedures using a variety of communication methods (telephone, email, regular mail).
  • Answer routine directional and informational and reference queries by patrons at the desk or on the phone. Complete quick searches, quality control searches, claim return searches, including physical searches in the stacks, and other Butler Library collections.
  • Place and remove library holds in the Student Information Services system, and in the integrated library system.
  • Enter and edit patron information in Lenel, Delegated Identity and Access and Voyager systems.
  • Open and close LIO, circulation and other rooms in Butler Library including reference and the Milstein reading rooms. Record gate statistics at the main entrance to Butler.
  • Provide coverage in other Access Services units, when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and/or its equivalent required.
  • Strong customer-service orientation.
  • Experience using computers in a work environment and facility using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to respond to customer-service via e-mail, telephone, and in-person in a fast-paced environment that deals with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and visiting library users.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Public service experience working in a library or research institution.
  • Knowledge of an integrated library system, preferably Voyager.
  • Working knowledge of a Western European language.
  • Strong computer skills.
